There are moments when travelling that remind you why slowing down is so important. My October canoeing adventure along the Tirino River in Abruzzo was one of those moments — a chance to disconnect from the noise of everyday life and immerse myself in the extraordinary beauty of nature.

We were asked to travel in complete silence.

It was extraordinary how much more we noticed when nobody spoke. The reflections on the water, the movement of the plants, the birds and the sheer peacefulness of our surroundings.
Sometimes silence really is the best way to experience a place.
